It was Lex's intervention that prevented Matrix from coming to help Clark in the fight against Doomsday that would eventually kill him in 's "Death of Superman" storyline , though she did continue to attempt to protect Metropolis in his absence. Later, Lex's treachery was revealed when Matrix uncovered that he had been secretly cloning her in order to make an army of his own personal "Supergirl" soldiers. She promptly flew into a rage, destroying his lab and the clones. This betrayal sent her into an existential crisis where she began to question whether or not she had a soul.
Using her shape-shifting and mind-melding abilities, Matrix merged with Linda and the two became a singular entity, the Earth Angel of Fire. However, this new status was only temporary. She retained some of her metahuman abilities and continued to serve as Supergirl for a brief period of time. The third or, technically, fourth iteration of Supergirl was Cir-El, the time traveling daughter of Clark Kent and Lois Lane brought to the present by an organization called the Futuresmiths.
Though the true nature of her parentage remained up for debate after some tests, Clark came to recognize Cir-El as family and a worthy holder of the Supergirl mantle. Cir-El worked closely alongside both the Superman and Batman families for several years before the truth of her history came to light.
Pulled between her two warring identities, Cir-El's story came to a close when the Futuresmiths finally came to collect. Caught in an endless, time-skipping war with the villain Brainiac, Cir-El was forced to leap into an interdimensional portal, sacrificing herself, to end the cycle of time loops and dystopian futures her existence kept causing. However, due to her anomalous temporal qualities, Cir-El was still able to return, occasionally, to the present day.
This version of the story included most of her original origin story, with the added element of the intention for her to be Clark's caretaker, whose escape pod had been suspended and delayed. In this continuity, Kara arrived for the first time during the Modern Age, a young and disoriented girl who could only speak Kryptonian discovered upon her landing by both Superman and Batman.
Confused and baffled by her appearance at first, both Clark and Bruce were wary to trust her identity, but slowly opened up to the possibility that her story was true upon running a battery of tests. She did not return to the present day until 's "One Year Later" time-skip event, in which she took over the protection of Metropolis in Superman's absence, alongside Booster Gold. This version of Kara took on the civilian name Linda Lang, adopting an identity as Lana Lang's niece after she decided to scale back her activities as a Super Hero temporarily.
Later, Kara and Clark discovered the miniaturized, bottled city of Kandor in the ship of Vril Dox, the original Brainiac. They both came from Krypton planet. But before it got blown up, Superman was placed on a space capsule to Earth when he was a baby to escape and protect himself against the destruction. Supergirl was then sent after the space capsule to watch over her cousin and remain unified no matter what.
Superman outlived the excursion and was later found by the Kent family. During this time, they reside in Kansas and do farming as a means of living. Kal-El Superman was raised as their own son and named Clark. The rest is history, from learning about his birthright and staggering powers to combating good against evil.
If Superman made it to the Earth with no glitches, the opposite happened to Supergirl. She encountered some issues while taking her trip from Argo City to Earth. It did not only take her a few days, weeks, or months before finally landing on the human planet — but two decades in general. Kal-El was already an adult man and became Superman by the time she arrived on Earth. Although, there are different versions of her origins. But the most basic form indicates that she was in her teenage years when Krypton detonated.
Upon entering Earth, she was raised as a Kryptonian and not as a human, unlike Superman. Spouses Edna and Fred Danvers adopted her. Who would have thought that a body-like teenager was born earlier? She may look younger than her cousin, but in reality, she was already a young adult when Kal-El was still a tiny baby. We have mentioned that they both left Krypton and their parents before the eruption happens, but they traveled separately.
Superman landed safely, while Supergirl got into some trouble. Time stopped for her, so as her aging process. What happened to her when she got trapped in the phantom zone was like she is only sleeping. Her mind and body did not change at all. During this period, Kal-El was becoming an adult on Earth. Kal-El did come to Earth as a baby , after all, which means his body had been absorbing solar radiation for over twenty years when he began his career as Superman.
By contrast, Kara came to Earth in her teens and only absorbed solar energy for a few years before she went public as Supergirl. That said, by Silver Age standards, Kara still had the power of a god and when she briefly came to the modern era, few heroes could match her abilities. She was subsequently sent to Earth in a rocket ship of her own, but spent years in suspended animation, absorbing yellow sun radiation in outer space. Regardless, Kara certainly seemed more powerful than Superman in her initial appearances.
Batman had several theories for this apparent disparity in power, including the idea that Supergirl had simply absorbed so much solar radiation during her extended trip to Earth that she was just naturally stronger. Later, however, fans got a different explanation for the power difference.
Superman stated that since he had been absorbing solar radiation constantly since he arrived on Earth, he had to deal with being much stronger and faster than other humans for his entire life.
