After Brutus finishes, Antony harangues the crowd with his famous funeral oration. The meticulous lucubration that encompasses Rogerian structure and clever word association allows Antony to manipulate the plebeians in opposition of Brutus. In order to refute any charging accusations or opinions, Brutus orates a speech that is given in prose in attempt to associate himself with the plebeians, who speak in prose to portray their lack of education and their barbarianism.
By using prose, Brutus brings himself down to the plebeian social level, one usually viewed as scum. Arguably, Brutus fits into this category perfectly after he brutishly murders Caesar. Although he attempts to appeal to the plebeians by doing this, he actually flaunts his stupidity and downright vileness. Not only is the delivery ironic, but the actual text as well.
Marc Antony's funeral oration after Caear's assassination is given with two intents: It is meant to disprove what Brutus says about Caesar's being ambitious.
It is meant to turn the people against the conspirators and cause civil unrest. What is Antony saying in his speech? Antony promises not to cause trouble when giving a funeral speech for his assassinated friend Caesar. He says the Brutus and the other assassins must have had good reason for doing it, because they are 'honorable. Who had a better speech Brutus or Antony? Mark Antony is the better rhetorician, and his speech is more effective than Brutus's.
Beyond that, however, while Brutus gave a competent and even moving speech, his goal was less ambitious than Antony's. Brutus wanted to justify the conspirators in their assassination of Caesar, a beloved leader. Does Brutus appeal to the emotions reasoning powers of the crowd?
Brutus appeals to the emotions of the crowd; he convinces them he did what he did for the good of the country.
How does Antony use "reverse psychology" in talking to the crowd? He keeps saying the conspirators are honorable. This causes the crowd to think logically and question if the conspirators were honorable. How is Brutus persuasive? He made his speech successfully persuasive by using tactful techniques to win the crowd's approval over. A second thing Marcus Brutus says while giving his speech, is he proclaims over and over again that he did love Caesar, which changed the hearts of the audience.
What did Antony say at the funeral? Why did Brutus and Cassius flee? He contradicts the accusations made by the conspirators of treason and demands that they be put to death for Caesar's murder. Why did Brutus and Cassius flee Rome? Their lives were in danger after Antony's remarks at the funeral.
The noble characters who have mastered language and can speak eloquently seem more qualified to tell others what to do. Casca presents a notable exception to the rule that noble characters speak in verse. In Act I, Scene ii, Brutus plucks Casca by the cloak to get him to remain on stage and tell him what happened when Caesar was offered the crown, and the two of them speak prose until Casca exits.
Another impression we might form of Casca who does speak verse later in the same act is that he has affected a false persona that is gruff and somewhat stupid, in order to protect himself from being perceived as a threat to Caesar, as Cassius is. He wants his motives to be clearly intelligible, and his speech is therefore easy to follow and devoid of stylistic distractions.
