So in season five, Jeff became a teacher, and instead of being a study group, the main characters became a committee.
It was a big change, and Community never felt like the same show after it. The characters had to graduate at some point, but it should've happened during what was confirmed to be the last season.
Community retained all of the actors that we love. Remember, it was Season 5 and 6 that saw departures of main cast members. Nine out of the 13 episodes were directed by those who had worked on the show in Seasons 2 or 3. Do you see what I am getting at? The show was still intact. The show still looks and feels like Community , arguably more than Season 6 which changed shooting locations, length of episodes, and general tone.
While there is no replacing Dan Harmon, perhaps what is holding some back on Season 4 is the need to abandon the assumption that Community belongs completely to him; that its successes and failures depend solely on his involvement or lack thereof. I understand the debate. I understand the emotions. But I am asking you to reconsider rewatching Season 4 of Community.
It is not the best season of Community , but it deserves more respect for those who put time and effort into making the most of a hard situation. If nothing else, if you still cannot muster the strength to rewatch Season 4, know that Season 5 and 6 owe Season 4 their existences. It brought us Season 5 and 6, and hopefully a movie, and for that, we should say thanks.
Season 4 is really underrated. Season 4 actually has a lot of heart and character development, where the latter half of season 5 and the entirety of season 6 are really missing something. The ninth episode, Intro To Felt Surrogacy , has almost no redeeming features. If the season is an unflattering impression of Dan Harmon, then this ninth episode is the worst of it.

In a season with no follow-through, of course these big, utterly false character beats are simply never mentioned again. Harmon started back with a very soft reboot in the form of Repilot , which waves Changnesia away in a single line and begins a proper send-off for the departing Chevy Chase with a holographic cameo.
But Harmon did acknowledge and continue with the stuff that was good, even if it was just one character. Hawkins she meant activist Susan B. Anthony in protest to another campus dance leading Abed to do the sitcom trope of dating two girls on the same night, changing his clothes and getting confused between them. In the process, he gets close to genre-savvy coat check girl Rachel, perfectly played by Brie Larson, and the episode ends with the two of them agreeing to go on a real date sometime.
