What should a happy trail look like

Now what you should use for this trim is a trimmer with enough size guards to allow you to get that nice, graded appearance. The happy trail is a narrow, vertical band of hair that extends from the pubic hair to the belly button. There is a variation of the happy trail where it actually extends further than the belly button all the way up to the lower edge of the chest.

But in this tutorial, we are going to focus on the most common variation. So, the happy trail may or may not be visible already depending on how much hair you have surrounding it. The aim of this tutorial is to allow you to get that happy trail to pop while removing any excess around it — without making it look artificial.

All the trimming and tugging of hairs can cause irritation of the follicles, itching, razor burn, and razor bumps. Exfoliating before the trim helps this by removing any dead skin cells, oil or dirt at the base of the hairs. This allows for less friction during the trim and therefore less irritation and less risk of ingrown hairs. Although this irritation is more likely with shaving as opposed to trimming , it still happens and can be avoided. You should do it the day before however because exfoliating in itself can dry out and irritate the skin funnily enough.

So you need to give it a bit of time to heal before going at it with a trimmer. I prefer to lather on an exfoliating body scrub which is great at unclogging pores and reducing oil production.

However, you could also just use a body brush to scrub your skin and physically remove all that invisible gunk. Adjust the trimmer to 1mm and then trim the hairs leading into your bellybutton using the blade at an appropriate angle.

Removing the hair from inside the belly button itself will also make the entire trail look a lot neater. Now, the idea is to have a very natural looking gradient of hair length as you go from the sides of your abdomen inwards to your happy trail. It is usually a good idea to mark the outline of your desired happy trail with a white eyeliner pencil so that you know where to start trimming from. This just refers to what your happy trail will eventually be. You want to gradually shorten to pube length vertically, and you're tapering down to bare skin horizontally.

It might feel weird at first, but after you've been through the motions, you'll see that it's all pretty easy. At this point, you should have a decent happy trail. The shave is just to fully clean up parts that you want to keep smooth. A safety razor and shaving gel are all you need for this step. Take your time; this is more awkward than you will expect if you haven't done it before. Also, shave with the grain. Even if you're tempted to get an ultra-close shave, it's risky.

You're getting into sensitive skin territory, and razor bumps or redness will be visible when you remove your shirt. All of this effort is for nothing if you turn into a red monster.

The happy trail is a special part of male grooming. It's frequently visible, and it's one of those things that can crank up the dial on your sex appeal. What's nice is that it isn't labor-intensive. For all the advice you just read, the process only takes a few minutes, and happy trail maintenance fits nicely into your total male grooming routine. Whether you're maintaining the treasure trail or not, grooming is easiest when you consolidate.

It makes cleaning up easier, and it saves a lot of time. The opposite is true for shaving. While a consolidated shaving session could conceivably save time, it's a bad idea. Blades can dull pretty quickly when you're shaving a lot of surface area, and that's bad on several fronts. Besides, all shaving comes with a risk of nicks, cuts, and irritation. You want to spread that out. If you do a full shaving session right before a date, you might not want to take your clothes off that night.

You also might find yourself itching all over. Instead, make a daily grooming routine and rotate which part of the body receives the razor. Also, this makes it easier to use a clean razor on each part and avoid cross-contamination. Sometimes, you'll be in a hurry and combine your grooming and shower. We get it. In general, this is a bad practice. Shorter showers are better for your skin, and grooming keeps you in the water longer. Tea, not coffee is my fuel for writing.
